With thousands of posts and topics, the starwars.com message boards can be a bit overwhelming for even experienced users. This guide will help you differentiate the individual forums.
The reason we provide this guide is to help cut down on redundant topics. When you enter a forum, odds are you'll see several "locked" topics. These are occasionally locked for inappropriate material, or for being in the wrong forum, but quite often they're locked for being redundant.
Why is redundancy so bad? Because more often than not, it defeats the purpose of discussion. If everybody who saw Episode II posted an individual topic on what they thought about the movie, there'd be a bunch of one or two-post threads cluttering the boards, instead of one unified thread open for discussion.
Here's a simple way to avoid redundancy:
1) After figuring out what you want to talk about, find the most appropriate forum.
2) Almost every forum has a Thread Directory pinned at the top, under "announcement threads". Seek it out and give it a skim, and you're likely to find what you want to talk about.
3) Do a quick glance on the first page to see if your topic is already being discussed. The first page holds the most active discussions. Maybe poke into the next two or three pages too.
4) If after all this, you still can't find your topic, post a new one.

FORUM FEEDBACK Forum Feedback is your means of communicating to the Message Board Moderators and Administrators.
It is a moderated forum, meaning that individual posts must be "approved" by the Mods or Admins before they're visible to the public. All posts in Forum Feedback are read by the Mods and Admins, but not all are made public.
One of the main reasons for this is because Forum Feedback allows you to inform us of troublemakers on the boards without fear of recrimination or being branded a snitch. If a user is being abusive or disruptive, you can let us know about it privately, and we won't make that post public.
Another feature of Forum Feedback is that users who have had their accounts locked can post in that forum. If you find yourself banned, you will recieve an error message informing that your account has been "frozen in carbonite." If you think you were frozen in error, or don't quite understand what happened, you can try to plead your case in Forum Feedback.
Please note that Forum Feedback is for the discussion of the message boards, and not any other aspect of Star Wars. If your novel has a misprint, your toy is missing a gun, or your DVD has a scratch, there's nothing the Moderators can do about it.

EPISODES IV - VI Even after a quarter-century, people can't stop talking about the original Star Wars. The three films of the classic trilogy are consolidated into one thread for discussion purposes. Discuss the originals, the Special Editions, and the Original Trilogy DVD set.
Comparative threads that span both the classic and prequel trilogy may be locked and discussion redirected to the SW Misc. forum.

COLLECTING Collecting is more than just toys. Posters, stickers, statues, coins, cereal boxes and more ... if you've got a completist passion burning in you, share it with other collectors in this forum.
Please note, however, that this forum is NOT a flea market. It's not for transactions; it's only for discussion of the hobby. Posts offering items for sale will be deleted outright.

BOOKS, COMICS AND TELEVISION The Star Wars Expanded Universe just keeps expanding, and keep track of it in this forum. Whether discussing old school Marvel comics or the latest Fate of the Jedi paperback, here's the place for it.
You may notice there's a "questions" thread. This is for simple "one-off" questions that don't really warrant a full-scale discussion. If you're dying to know "what book was it in which Luke and Mara get married?" and don't actually want to have a full-fledged discussion about it, put it in the Questions thread.

CARDS AND ROLEPLAYING GAMES Looking for killer deck combos for the Star Wars TCG, Jedi Knights TCG, Young Jedi CCG, or Star Wars CCG?
Looking to discuss the D20 RPG from Wizards of the Coast, the D6 game from West End Games or a homebrew RPG set you've devised?
This forum is for discussion of card games and tabletop dice & paper roleplaying games.
It is NOT for actual roleplaying. That starts to creep on the "fan fiction" borderline which breaches the 'creative submission' clause of the Terms of Use. Threads in which online posters "roleplay" a situation may get locked or deleted.
If you want to discuss your campaigns, your rules interpretations, or your opinions on the latest game books, this is the place to do it. Or if you want to discuss decks, combos, availability of rares, or upcoming card game tournaments, this is the place as well.
Thread Directory http://forums.starwars.com/thread.jspa?threadID=136486
If you're still itching to roleplay online, though, see this thread:

FAN ACTIVITIES & EVENTS The Fan Activities & Events forum is to discuss, well, activities and events that fans partake in.
Just liking Star Wars doesn't qualify as an activity -- that's why you're on this site after all! These activities are a bit more hands on. If you like to craft your own costumes, write your own stories, or make your own Star Wars films, this is the place for you.
Also, if you're looking to organize get-togethers with fans in your local area, check this forum, particular the "Fan Clubs" thread, to see if there are fans nearby.
Note that this forum is for unofficial fan activities and events. If you want to discuss the Official Fan Club and its publications, then use that forum.
A word of note: There is a Fan Fiction thread, but it's more to discuss the process and to link to stories rather than actually posting stories. As per the message board Terms of Use, "creative submissions" are frowned upon for various reasons, and may be deleted outright if posted here.

STAR WARS MISCELLANEOUS If it doesn't fit anywhere else, but it's still about Star Wars, it goes here.
That's a pretty vague description, but nonetheless accurate. Usually, discussion about the films or about the expanded universe is pretty self-contained, and can go into its own forum. But some topics are so broad in scope that they are better suited for SW Misc.
For instance, if you wanted to ask about favorite characters, and include ALL the movies and ALL the books to choose from, then it should go in SW Misc. This thread is also popular for comparing Star Wars as a whole to other movies, books and characters.
