I remember all the bad press episode 1 got when it came out. Frankly I liked it when it first came out, and like it even more now. I actually wore out a VHS tape of TPM and over time I have come to regard it as the best episode of them all.
And I finnaly figured out why so many people badmouthed the movie, while seeing it numerous times BTW. Its not because Star Wars has changed, Its because WE have changed. And anyone that was around in 1977, can remember what the country/cinema/WE were like back then will probably agree with me...........MTFBWY

So many people thought that if Jesus didn't jump throught he screen during the movie it wouldn't be good enough. I hate that, it's not as good as the OT in my opinion, but it's a really sweet movie.

Personally I see the saga as a single on-running film broken up into 2 hour bits.
It's a waste of time to me to compare them to each other like it's a waste comparing the begining of a film to the end of the same film; isn't it supposed to build up? It's like saying the front of a car should look the same as the back, that the front of your head should look the same as the back.
No, it has 'a direction'. A flow. It tapers in, builds up, climaxes then ends with a bang... like all singular stories should.

I totally agree, the reason I started to watch Star Wars at all was because of ep.I, I love it! I enjoy the old original ones as well.

I think that what a lot of people mean when they say that TPM isn't as good as the original Star Wars is that it didn't have the same impact on them. I watch TPM more than any other Star Wars film. I grew up with the original films, and I understand the way those films made a lot of us feel in our youth. My experience with the film TPM wasn't better or worse, just different.
The bashing(not criticism) of TPM was an embarrassment to fandom. When I look back on TPM experience, I like to remember the unity of people camping out in line and the bonding that took place around this second home we all call Star Wars. That's what being a part of fandom is about. All of us getting together to share our thoughts and love for this universe we've come to love. I hope that fandom can get past this trash and burn mentality to come together and make Episode 3 a wonderful and positive experience.

i was the only one of my group of friends that didnt like tpm as much as they did but i watched it over and over again and saw it did have that feeling the original movies had. i think people expect to much out of these films they are seen in a different time a time where blockbuster movies are rulers of the big screen which started with star wars "a new hope".but i do believe george lucas is not a good director look at this he did not direct empire strikes back the best one or rotj.

I think part of it has to do with the way these films grow with you. They have so much depth and detail to them that it takes repeated viewings to figure everything out.
When a single viewing of TPM or AOTC doesn't instantly give them the same substance that the classic trilogy took 20 years to give out, they panicked and assumed they didn't have any substance to them.
Time will heal these misunderstandings, but until then, people will think it makes them look cool to trash the prequels.

That is absolutely true, and this is also how GL wants to present it. It's a 12 hour long epic super-saga.

I think that whoever is bashing Star Wars, especially the first episode should shut up right now, because it was awsome! The acting and just everything was outstanding. Besides, I've always wanted to know what happened before the original episodes. Even now I've been reading Star Wars books in between episodes 1 & 2. They rock! Anyway,I tend to dwell in the past. Knowing how Anaking turned to the dark side is depressing & yet interesting to know that in the end he was bright back to the right side by Luke.

Phantom Menace was a good movie, not great, just good; Jar Jar haters should just SHUT UP! After seeing AOTC, TPM seems rather humble in terms of CG work. Menace has an authentic feel, the children actually act like children, but in Clones, the only reason the Anakin and Padme get "twitterpated" is that the story requires them to, it seems a little forced (pun intended). I have a theory, though, that Anakin used the force to make Padme fall for him (it works on some levels).
(I wasn't copying Missingminijedi19 with my first sentence, that's just coincidence)

I'm sick of the TPM bashing. I wish people who hated it would just let go of it. The movie isn't going to magically change into what they wanted it to be.
