What if there was a different animal (a chicken ancestor) that laid an egg and that egg hatched into what we now call a chicken?

That's easy
the chicken, they never knew who the chickens father was, but the chicken had a very high midiclorian count. the chicken helped produce two eggs one of which will be the most powerful chicken in the universe, but only after going to dagoba and learning from the little green hen, which definatly came before the chicken and the egg.:)

Depends. Young-Earth creationists say the chicken came first, b/c why would God bother creating the egg when He could go straight to the chicken. Old-Earth peeps believe the egg came first, either just in general (come on, you don't think chickens were the first creatures in history to lay eggs, do you?) or on the grounds that a chicken egg once came from a not-quite-chicken ancestor, and the egg then hatched into a chicken.
I spend way too much time thinking about these things.

Nope. It doesn't. The egg came first. It was a magical one...
