A monarch, as the living symbol of the nation, is more easy to identify with than a constitution or ideology.

The dignity and prestige of a monarch enhances the status of a nation.

A monarch stands above politics, not owing allegiance to any political party or group and not beholden to any business interest which might fund a presidential campaign.

A monarch is able to unite a nation by representing all races, creeds, classes and political beliefs, because a monarch does not have to curry favour for votes from any section of the community.

A monarch is almost invariably more popular than an Executive President, who can be elected by less than 50% of the electorate and may therefore represent less than half of the people. A monarch is trained from birth for the position of Head of State. The people know who will succeed, and this certainty gives a nation invaluable continuity and stability.
Elected presidents are concerned more with their own political futures and power, and as we have seen (in Brazil for example), may use their temporary tenure to enrich themselves. Monarchs are not subject to the influences which corrupt short-term presidents. A monarch looks back on centuries of history and forward to the well-being of the entire nation under his heir. Elected presidents in their nature devote much energy to undoing the achievements of their predecessors and setting traps for their successors.

With monarchs it is the reverse: they build on the achievements of their forebears in order to strengthen the position of their successors.A long-reigning monarch can put enormous experience at the disposal of transient political leaders. Since succeeding her father in 1952 Queen Elizabeth has had a number of Prime Ministers, the latest of whom were not even in Parliament at the time of her accession. An experienced monarch can act as a brake on over-ambitious or misguided politicians, and encourage others who are less confident. The reality is often the converse of the theory: the monarch is frequently the Prime Minister?s best adviser.

By retaining certain constitutional powers, or at least denying them to others, a monarch is the safeguard against civil or military dictatorship. Sir Winston Churchill said that had the Kaiser still been German Head of State after 1918, Hitler could not have come to power, or at least not remained there.

A monarch and members of a Royal Family can become involved in a wide range of issues which are forbidden to politicians.

Aided by his immediate family, a monarch can carry out a range of duties and public engagements - ceremonial, charitable, environmental etc. which an Executive President would never have time to do, and to which a ceremonial President would not add lustre.

We have inherited a freedom which uniquely extends over a thousand years under the Monarchy which has preserved our Christian way of life and heritage unparalleled anywhere in the world. It is our duty to ensure it is handed down for the well-being of future generations.

Of course if they are a complete tyrant than 3 or 4 generations of people are hosed. No one gets to choose the Monarch, they are given their position because of their bloodline. I'm sorry but your argument will not convince very many people that Monarchy is the way to go.

Welcome to the boards.

interresting position Royalist. Some really good arguments in there. Lots to consider.

So are you advocating a figure-head monarch with a parliamentary body-politik for day to day govenance or a fully autonomous monarch with supreme legal authority?

I can respect a lot of the points that you bring up Royalist, but Maulfroe is correct. How can a body of people support a monarchy if that same body doesn't at least have a minimal say in how that monarchy is to be run?

They can have a say in the Monarch's affairs (in Belgium, the Senate even decides if His Majesty is allowed to marry...) but they are completely above politics.
They are not elected, so they do not have a political color, which can divide the people.
The best about the Monarch is that he is always there for the people, as a symbol of stability and National Pride.

(gonna get this to the top to stir intrest)

The british moarchy is in charge of the goverment. if the monarchy wish to do so they can dissolve parliment. that is if the parliment becomes so corrupt it needs doing.
this way is more intresting, coz really, the monarchy are deligating the everyday and legal system to the goverment. but the monarchy is there as a back up.

i agree with royalist.
i can see a day when brits will say to a corrupt goverment "get out" and put the monarchy back in.
you never know it could happen.

What if there was no one perfect form of government? Are they not all flawed?

yes they are all flawed, that is why combinations are good at times.
the queen gives the PM advice once aweek as the PM asks for it. this way a person who will be incharge for 4 years can ask a person who has been at the top since the beginning. and who has a great deal of experiance. thats one of the benifits.
there also better diplomats than stuffy politicians
