*Since the NJO ends 29 years ABY, rather than 30, DN is actually six years after The Unifying Force, not five, and the ages of Jacen, Jaina, and Ben are off by a year. Will this be fixed by Legacy of the Force? Also, will the timeline be fixed? ie, will it say 25 - 29 rather than 25 - 30 for the NJO?

I'm going to leave this one to Leland --*

DN is actually less than 6 years after TUF since you have to take into account the amount of time that transpires over the course of that book. No plans to change the 25-30 timespan for NJO which goes back to our predilection towards using round numbers.

Yes, I am involved in the timelines and am consulted as needed about character ages. When calculating ages, I use the year of when the book is supposed to take place and the character's birth year.

Well, since he's such a popular character, popular enough that he was going to be included in a Star Wars movie, I think that our hope may be the slightest bit justified...

Whoa! Yes! Quinlan Vos, maybe? I don't read the comics (unfortunately), so I don't even know his fate. But nobody tell me! Not for my sake but spoilers are booooooooo!

Well, none of us are going to know until January.

Is Leland involved with the timelines in the books? And also... the character's ages?

Listening to the Rick McCallum DVD Press Event Audiocast, and he says that the live-action series has "a lot of characters we haven't met, but have been developed in other, y'know, in some of the novels and other things".

That's good news. :D

:^O I can see why you would say this after your Anakin-Mara theory ;)

On ages... there are some "wiggles" in the later NJO, most notably the gap between DW and FH3; but the base date to start from is SbS, when Ben is significantly less than four months old at the start, the twins are nineteen, Tahiri is fifteen (or turns fifteen before Ben hits four months, anyway), and Anakin is seventeen... but so long as the twins are 19 years older than Ben, everything should be fine...

They are nineteen years older in DN3, right? ?:|

See, that makes sense to me. What's the point of listing characters who are going to be introducted in the book? Take Joiner King. Who needed Gorog the Killik Mastermind listed for them? If anything, that detracts from the story itself.

Exactly.

I have a question for Sue: There's been quite a bit of debate here lately about the dating issues of Dark Nest. Since the NJO ends 29 years ABY, rather than 30, DN is actually six years after The Unifying Force, not five, and the ages of Jacen, Jaina, and Ben are off by a year. Will this be fixed by Legacy of the Force? Also, will the timeline be fixed? ie, will it say 25 - 29 rather than 25 - 30 for the NJO?

I'm going to leave this one to Leland --

I thought that the NJO ended at 30 ABY because The Unifying Force goes from 29 ABY all the way to 30 ABY. I thought the story was a full year itself.

That might have helped the timeline make more sense, but it really doesn't seem to be the case.

Just thought I'd drop in and say hello. I've been skulking around the blogs for awhile now, but thought I would skulk somewhere new for awhile. (Skulk is a fun word.)

Welcome, Ryan!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go skulk to the fridge and get something to eat, then skulk back to the couch and watch some TV. (Ah, it is a fun word!) :D

Jeff Ferguson, that's the best explanation for DPs I've ever read.

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd drop in and say hello. I've been skulking around the blogs for awhile now, but thought I would skulk somewhere new for awhile. (Skulk is a fun word.)

I've really enjoyed your contributions to my blog and I look forward to chatting in this forum and others, especially as my next Republic Commando tale comes out in Clone Wars Adventures Vol. 4 October 19th.

And thanks to James T. Skywalker for setting up this forum. :D

In BFC, K-Mac did it a little differently --- he only included Dramatis Personaes in the two latter editions of the trilogy, and they contained lists of characters from the previous books

The two previous series I'm talking about are the X-Wing novels and the Black Fleet Crisis trilogy. I assumed that Stackpole chose to put the Dramatis Personae in, and Allston chose to continue it, as the readers liked it and it helped them keep track. In BFC, K-Mac did it a little differently --- he only included Dramatis Personaes in the two latter editions of the trilogy, and they contained lists of characters from the previous books, rather than the current. So, for example, Shield of Lies had a list of all the characters from Before the Storm, to bring readers back up to speed, as BS had been released a few months previous. It also let us know where all of the characters were --- eg, Chewbacca was on Kashyyyk, and had been so since early in BS; readers might have forgotten why he wasn't with Han on Coruscant. Borsk Fey'lya made his first appearance in the trilogy in Shield of Lies, and so wasn't in the Dramatis Personae until Tyrant's Test.
