and I also like what we're learning about Richard -- "I'm this way because of Jacob"
I've always had a hunch (ever since young Ben met him in the jungle) that Richard has something to do with the Black Rock... Maybe a crew member or stowaway or something like that. I've had an idea that Richard arrived on the Black Rock and Jacob saw some kind of long-term potential in him or something.

Thank You Aly!!! You're my hero!
Anytime. ;)
At least ONE question has been answered and that was what the statue is. Now I have 2, 387, 497, 961 more questions that need answers.... Anyone... anyone...
Ask your questions, then. ;p

What if Richard arrived on The Black Rock as a baby? To his knowledge, he's always lived on the island.
Or, he was captain of the Black Rock, and made immortal.

I always had the somewhat vague impression that Jacob and Richard struck some kind of deal in the (distant) past, something that allowed Richard to never age; if you recall what he said to Dark Locke in the finale - more importantly the context and the tone in which he spoke it - it sounded more like he was defending himself against Locke's comment, like it was something he was proud of, but self-conscious about at the same time.
Something must have happened way back when (probably Black Rock era) to Richard. Something that allowed him to demonstrate that he was capable of making the right choices when it came to defending/protecting the island, and Jacob decided to grant him immortal life so that he could spend eternity helping/guiding their leader as well as advising.

You know, with all this speculation about everything on this show and all the questions and all the sleepless nights I've had thinking about this I'm going to be extremely ticked off at the writers if they end the series as some sort of "dream sequence cliffhanger". Something like a teenage Aaron having a terrible car wreck and waking up in recovery after a miraculous surgery performed by Jack.

The producers have said specifically that it will not all be just a dream. So, some consolation there.

I think I'm off of Lost. I really believe they jumped the Shark for me with that ending. For me at least. We finally get to see the mysterious Character we've been teasing us with for most of the seasons. But then BAM. A new Mysterious Character who shape shifted into Locke at an unknown point and time. How unoriginal and uninspired that the good character wears White and the bad character wears Black. It's going to be many months before the last season and they certainly didn't leave me wanting more.

That's an assumption on your part. There is a very large contingency of people who believe that Jacob is actually the bad guy. We don't know.

Umm.. It's Lost. Did you really expect any less? Every season we're introduced to new, mysterious characters.

Sobek is credited with catching the four sons of Horus in a net, as they emerged from the waters of the Nile in a lotus blossom.
Interesting to consider: Could Horace on LOST have had more than one son? Has he lived for many years on the island as Richard has? ...Just a thought...
But if the statue were Taweret:
Taweret became seen, very early in Egyptian history, as a deity of protection in pregnancy and childbirth. Pregnant women wore amulets with her name or likeness to protect their pregnancies. Her image could also be found on knives made from hippopotamus ivory, which would be used as wands in rituals to drive evil spirits away from mothers and children.
I think this would be a good reason to idolize Taweret as a protector, since so many pregnancies on the island ended in the death of the child.

Agreed. For all his mischeviousness, callously plotting and manipulating the Losties and a ton of other people, I really don't feel Jacob is some sort of angel of good. The only indication that leads us to believe that the other guy is "evil" is because he told Jacob he wanted to kill him and convinced Ben to carry that out . . . and wore a dark shirt when the Black Rock came to the island. That's it, really.
You have to remember that nothing is as it seems on Lost.

Tuesday is going to be a busy night then. I wish more stuff was on Wednesdays... Only Nip/Tuck, and I think that's it. Every other night is packed with shows.
