There are already threads about Grand Admiral Thrawn and Grand Admiral Pellaeon, but what about the original twelve Imperial Grand Admirals? So far, they've only appeared in supporting roles and "throwaway" references in the background of the EU, and often in the more obscure works at that, but with the Rebellion and pre-ANH eras about to be thrown wide open for future EU material, we might (hopefully) see more of them soon.
Just to recap, the original twelve are:
-Grand Admiral Martio Batch
-Grand Admiral Nial Declann
-Grand Admiral Grant
-Grand Admiral Josef Grunger
-Grand Admiral Ishin Il-Raz
-Grand Admiral Afsheen Makati
-Grand Admiral Danetta Pitta
-Grand Admiral Peccati Syn
-Grand Admiral Miltin Takel
-Grand Admiral Osvald Teshik
-Grand Admiral Rufaan Tigellinus
-Grand Admiral Demetrius Zaarin
The CUSWE has background on all twelve, and jSarek's site offers a more detailed summary...

And, of course, anyone else's speculation on the next Grand Admiral (Pellaeon's successor) would be welcome, within the limits of the creative submission ban. (I've got a pretty detailed concept in mind for the next Grand Admiral, but discussing her would be a violation of that policy...)

Cool thread. I hope they do some really well thought out stories. Something to do the Grand Admirals justice, not just some lame filler crap.

I always wondered why they never did anything else with the Grand Admirals. We only really hear about Thrawn and of course more recently Thrawn's protege Pellaeon. I understand that Thrawn was a one of a kind, but these other GA had to be pretty good too to earn that title (they've got to be better than idiots like Zinsj(sp?) who had all those books about him).

Cool thread.
Thanks.

Agreed. Some of the Grand Admirals really were just invented as background details. I keep thinking of sarcastic remarks about Grand Admiral Filler...

Same here. I also wonder why Grand Admiral Grant doesn't seem to have a first name.

Based on what has been written about them, I'd say they were mostly pretty good...
...Except Il-Raz. He makes Zsinj look like Thrawn. The less said about him, the better, IMO...

Tresk:
Heh, thank you for starting a topic on one of my favorite parts of the EU. I've put a lot of research into it, and the fruits of my labor can be found on my Imperial Grand Admirals website. It also has healthy biographies of Thrawn and Pellaeon, to boot.

Indeed. Until the Grand Admirals article in Insider, all we knew about Teshik was that he was in charge of Core security and that the Emperor was going to kill him if he didn't catch the Far Orbit; and all we knew about Makati was that Wedge stole some data on him from Boudolayz library.

You're welcome. I thought you'd find this thread. And thanks for the link, I'd lost it.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't SWI 66 the first we'd ever heard of Declann? I don't post at TFN, but I've been known to lurk there, and I seem to recall an old thread with the title "Missing Grand Admiral...?" or something to that effect...

Same here, too. I keep hoping someone will be clever enough to name him Hairemyu (kudos to anyone who can figure out this absurdly obscure reference).

Heh, yeah, political hack if ever there was one.
Tigellinus didn't seem to be much of a tactical genius, either.

Not a clue... Far more original than Kaelis' suggestion: Ulysses.

Yup.

Yes, I'd say he definitely counts as another lackluster Grand Admiral...

Don't worry, Suzanne. I know I'm a bit far gone. As jSarek might say, I know I'm pushing the line between fanboy and psycho fanboy... j/k
EDIT.oO[I don't know why she teases me about being a fanboy. What on Earth could give anyone that idea?]

I'd like to see (ex)Grand Admiral Grant show up with the Galactic Alliance. He left Imperial service and retired. According to Insider, he would have like to have squared off against Thrawn, but the NR never contacted him. He's (presumably) still alive, so I'd like to see him.
As for Pellaeon's successor, I don't feel like we've been exposed to any promising young Imperial officers in the EU. Maff Saretti is the closest, but he's a politician, not a military man.

I agree, alhtough even Pellaeon wasn't a promising Imperial officer until recently. I thought that the Force Heretic series set Jacen up for that role nicely if he ever decided to join the Imperial Navy, but that's doubtful, and plus there would need to be a successor between Pellaeon and Jacen still since there is a huge age gap.

That would be very interesting. I'm not sure the Galactic Alliance (or Imperial Remnant) would trust him enough to bring him back to active duty, but they might call him in to advise, perhaps...
(Sort of like Captain Ramius of the Red October in Tom Clancy's novel The Cardinal of the Kremlin...)

Interesting... I agree that Jacen would be unlikely to join the Empire in any capacity, much less a military one...
I almost wondered about Jaina. But again, she's too young, IMO. And probably wouldn't want to serve the Empire, even as it is now...

Very true. Captain Yage is the closest I can think of, but she's still just the captain of a frigate.
However, FH1 mentions Pellaeon conferring with the Imperial Navy's other, more junior, admirals after the Battle of Borosk. I suspect one of them will be established as a new character, and succeed Pellaeon...
